On the Gedempte Zuiderdiep, there used to be a fire station, where fire trucks were still pulled by horse and carriage, steam extinguishers were used, and a bit later, the first fire trucks were put into service. Now, where the station used to be, there is a Pathé cinema, but the cozy eatery on the opposite side has been reminding people of this previous function since 1994.
Not only the logo and the red colors in the D’ouwe Brandweer are inspired by the old station. The entire interior is full of old photos and references to that time. There are even old ladders hanging from the ceiling.
The menu mainly features meat meals such as spare ribs, schnitzel, a mixed grill, or various burgers. In addition, there are, of course, many other options such as market fish, salads, snacks, and vegetarian cheese fondue or quiche. Real firefighters, must, of course, have a hearty bite. The eatery also has its own craft beer called “de Brandblusser” (Dutch for fire extinguisher).
In addition to food, you can borrow games from the game cabinet for extra fun or reserve a pub quiz for groups of 15 or more. They haven't lost the connection with their neighbors across the street. By using one of the two Pathé menus, it is possible to reserve a three-course menu and tickets for the cinema across the street. A cozy night out for a good price.
Eetcafé D’ouwe Brandweer is open from Monday to Thursday at 16:00 and from Friday to Sunday at 15:00.
