Trompsingel 27, 9724 DA GroningenIn 2023, the NNO performed Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony at Lowlands, with overwhelming success. It showed how a pop audience can become enthusiastic and emotionally moved by a classical masterpiece. The success was due to the special chemistry between orchestra, audience and chief conductor Eivind Gullberg Jensen. Those who were not there now have the chance to catch up in the concert hall, once again with Gullberg Jensen on the podium. And even though the setting is different, the musical impact remains the same. Beethoven’s Ninth has a unique symbolic meaning. The beginning has been compared to the creation of the universe or Creation itself. And in the final movement, a full choir rises to sing about brotherhood and freedom. This melody was elevated to the European anthem and is seen worldwide as a symbol of unity and peace. There is always a need for that, perhaps now more than ever.
